How Do We Make A Doodle?
The chart below gives you the best graphic of “How we create doodles” and “multi-generational” doodles. To make it simple, we are using a Golden Retriever on our chart display as the purebred “P” dog in the combination. Many poodle combinations exist to give the breeder a specific desired doodle. The ratio in which we combine purebreds to make a generational doodle will most of the time be the same (50/50) ratio, but in cases of F1b’s, we breed back to a Poodle for a more hypoallergenic dog. In F1b doodles, the ration 3/4 Poodle and 1/4 Golden Retriever (or other purebred “P” dog).
Let's Get Started
F1 Goldendoodles
For the start, we take two purebred parents, the “P” generation, which means the Sire and Dam are 100% purebred or Pedigree. We combine the two purebreds to get an (F1) generation (first-generation doodle). The ratio of these doodles will always be the same, 50% Poodle and 50% Golden Retriever, as displayed on our graph below. Simple, right?
F2 Goldendoodles
When we breed an (F1) Goldendoodle plus another (F1) Goldendoodle together, the result is an (F2) Goldendoodle. In simplicity, it is a second-generation doodle. The same ratio exists (50/50), but we have added another generation of breeding.
F3 Goldendoodles
When two (F2) Goldendoodles are bred together you get yet another generation– an (F3) Goldendoodle. Same as the second, but the next generation, the third generation. This means that (F3’s) parents and grandparents were both Goldendoodles. Anything after (F3’s), or third-generation doodles, we typically call “Multi-Generational” doodles.
It is also important to note that all these moms, dads, and grandparents (Sires and Dams) have different origins, they are unrelated to each other and each of them has separate bloodlines. The Doodle Farm DOES NOT INBREED their doodle generations. Genetics are a fundamental key to healthy breeding practices and is of the utmost concern to us at Red Barn Doodle Farm.
Doodles Come in All Colors and Sizes
At the Doodle Farm, we breed the standard range and the colors vary depending on the Sire and Dam. Generally, our colors range from chalk, buff, apricot, caramel, brown, and black. Color is a tricky thing! Colors change as a puppy grows and develops. The adult color may be entirely different than the apparent color you see when the puppy is a newborn.
