What is a Doodle?

Doodles are engineered mixed-purebred dogs, normally of equal parts, however, many combinations exist to create a very special and unique hybrid dog with minimal shedding (depending on generation) and are very hypoallergenic.

A doodle is actually a hybrid breed with a great deal of complexity.  Many purebred breeders look upon them as “mixed breeds” with no purebred conformity.  But in actuality, they are a careful combination of 2 different purebred dogs bred together, giving you a doodle!  The advantage of this combination is very apparent — a doodle gives you many qualities from each purebred dog that is unique and very desirable.

A purebred Poodle, which is the main component in a doodle combination, is responsible for 2 main qualities — a Poodle does not shed and is very hypoallergenic.  When this breed is combined with other purebred dogs, you retain qualities from the other purebred dog that is also desirable, which may not be found exclusively in the Poodle breed alone.  Such qualities are size, color, hair coat, temperament, intelligence, friendly outgoing personalities, sportiness, etc

For example, a Labradoodle is a combination of a purebred Poodle and a purebred Labrador Retriever.  The Poodle gives you a hair coat that is hypoallergenic and does not shed with an agile body frame that comes in many different sizes.  The Labrador, on the other hand, gives you qualities such as a sturdy, more tough body frame that will lend better to fetching and retrieving, hiking, hunting, or swimming laps in a pool.  When these 2 breeds are combined, they make a terrific pet for a family with an active lifestyle.

The Goldendoodle has the same unique combination, but with different qualities from the Golden Retriever.  The Golden gives attributes such as playfulness, calm and loving personalities, they are very loyal and intelligent.  They make exceptional family and therapy dogs.  Each doodle combination is different from another, making it a better fit for some families over others.  This is why a doodle is so special — it’s actually the careful combination of 2 or more different dogs that make it so wonderful.  With a doodle, it takes much more time to get it just right.  We look at confirmation, color, size, temperament, intelligence, agility, hair coat, and health testing on both breeds before we combine a Sire and Dam for breeding.

With this said, there are NO guarantees.  We do our best to fundamentally guess what the outcome will be.  Depending on the breed types chosen, we can, with more accuracy than not, determine breeding results.  Genetics play a big role in breed outcome, but once again, it is Nature over Science that determines a doodle.
